Middle School English
The Middle School language arts program at St. John the Baptist equips students with communication and critical thinking skills that will help them become articulate participants in the greater community.
Over the course of three middle school years, students will read a variety of literature ranging from poetry, essays, and short stories to plays and novels. The students read from authors such as S.E. Hinton, Lois Lowry, Gary Soto and even Shakespeare.
Our writing program uses the 6 traits system and students are guided through the writing process progressively. By the time they graduate, students will have mastered essay and basic research writing skills, including MLA formatting. Beginning in 6th grade the students also use the Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary workshop series. This series is also used by some of the local Catholic high schools. The vocabulary includes SAT style words and questions helping students not only build strong vocabularies but also to prepare for college tests.
The Middle School language arts teachers work collaboratively to ensure that students receive a comprehensive program that prepares them for their future academic and life work.
