Parent Faculty Association (PFA)
Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together.
Parent Faculty Association (PFA)
Welcome!
All parents and guardians of students currently attending St. John the Baptist Catholic School are voting members of the Parent Faculty Association (PFA). PFA meetings are held on the second Thursday in the months of September, November, January, March and May (every other month) at 6:00 p.m. in the school library.
The primary purpose of the PFA is to support a Catholic education, help build a sense of community and assist the school financially through various fundraising activities. Below is a detailed list of the programs and fundraisers the PFA oversees. Please also see the school calendar below for specific dates and times.
Programs
New Family Mentors – In August, new, incoming families are paired with a family already established at the school to help with questions, advice and making connections. Any current family may volunteer to be a mentor. The time commitment is small and the positive effect on the school community is far reaching.
New Family Ice Cream Social – This is a casual meet and greet event, hosted by PFA Officers, for new families before the start of school. It’s an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and other new families, see the classroom, drop off supplies, check out the playground and enjoy some ice cream in the last days before the school year officially kicks off.
Pastries with Parents – Want a brief reprieve after that first drop off of the new year? Pastries with Parents gives you a chance to say hello again after a long summer, enjoy coffee and pastries and get PFA-related questions answered. Hosted by PFA Officers and donations of pastries are welcome and appreciated.
Room Parents – At the start of each year, three to four parents per grade are asked to volunteer to facilitate communications among the remaining class parents and organize three holiday class parties. Assistance may also be requested for Teacher Appreciation Week activities and other needs that arise.
Conference Night Teacher Supper – In October, parent-teacher conferences are scheduled over 1 1/2 days, requiring teachers to work from 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. To help them through this very long day and to show thanks, parents volunteer to arrange a hot meal at the school for them to enjoy at their convenience.
Fundraisers
Jogathon – The Jogathon is our school’s second largest fundraiser. Held the first week of October, students gather pledges then prepare to run as many laps as possible on the big day. Incentives and prizes are given at all-school assemblies for a variety of goals met. Students run in their house groups, boosting morale and Cougar pride. Event sponsors from the community are also solicited to help reach our goal. Parents are welcome and needed to volunteer but may also attend to run with their child(ren) or cheer them on from the sidelines.
Annual Auction and Benefit Dinner – Our annual auction in April is the school’s largest fundraiser and best attended/most anticipated event! Throughout the year, much work is put into procuring and creating auction items. Countless opportunities exist for participating and contributing. When the big night arrives, parents and supporters show up in full regalia, drawing inspiration from the year’s chosen theme, to enjoy a child-free evening full of socializing, shopping and supporting our most important cause: our students! https://sjbcatholicschool.org/support-us/auction-and-dinner/

Communications
We do our very best to stay in communication with families and use multiple tools to do so.
SchoolSpeak emails – SchoolSpeak sends direct emails to all families when information is deemed urgent or timely.
Weekly Newsletter – The weekly newsletter is sent in a SchoolSpeak email. It includes coverage of events in the recent past or near future. The newsletter celebrates and invites participation in school events, with a portion devoted to the PFA.
PFA Facebook page – The PFA Facebook page is a private, invitation-only site providing a forum for parents to converse and view reminders for upcoming events. Every parent or guardian with a Facebook account may request an invitation.
Bulletin Board – In the school building, a bulletin board can be viewed in the hall outside the principal’s office. There, notices and event information is posted and fliers are available. When possible, QR codes are also posted for quick access to online information.
Meetings – Regular business meetings are held on the second Thursdays of September, November, January, March and May at 6:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m. in September). They are casual and social but informative and are a great time to meet other parents and voice your thoughts.
